Lighting Paths, Renewing Minds, Transformed Lives
To Love God, To Love One Another
Don’t pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong.
Hold tightly to what is good.
Love each other with a genuine affection and take delight in honouring each other.

And without faith it is impossible to please God. because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Hebrews 11:6

Turning to look at my bedside clock, 5 minutes to 5am…….Sigh! 🙁 I’m been in and out of sleep this whole time! The culprit was possibly that last cup of cappuccino I had at 9pm last night. So I decided to get up and remember yesterday, the scene still fresh in my mind ……….
What a day it was! We had our Women Ministry event, ‘Walking In Faith’, with our speaker Judith Halim. We were all both blessed and inspired!
Judith shared her life openly with us. Waves upon of waves of challenges was upon her and they were not small ripples, but some were huge tall waves! More like giants to me; David’s Goliath. Yet like David, Judith chose to keep her focus on her Almighty God instead of her Goliath. Sounds like something I’ve just heard from my Book on CD, Max Lucado’s ‘Facing Your Giants’;
“Focus on your giants and you stumble
Focus on God and your giants tumble.”
Judith shared one important truth with us. If we want our lives to change, we need to let God change our minds and our hearts. She shared about her refusal to allow negative thoughts to dwell in her mind. She would memorise and verbalise scriptures to counter the negative thoughts all day long. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all you ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”(Proverbs 3:5-6) was one of those scriptures that she would repeat in her mind and her lips again and again all day long. She learnt that she didn’t need to understand why these pains and problems were happening to her, she only need to put her whole trust in Jesus.
Judith held on to God’s word, literally word for word. She’d hold on to God’s promises refusing to give in to doubt. In one of her lowest time, God led her to a passage in the Bible,
“The Lord says, ‘I will give you back what you lost to the swarming locusts,
the hopping locusts, the stripping locusts, and the cutting locusts.'”
Judith held on to those words at a time when her husband then had abandoned her for another woman, leaving her behind in a foreign land with an extremely sick baby and no income.
As surely as the sun rises in the east, Judith believed that God will keep His promises. Coming from Medan, Indonesia, Judith speaks only Malay and Hokkien. Her first job here was being a security guard with a pay of $2.80 per hour. With a baby that needed constant health care, it was almost impossible to cope. She could afford only 1 meal a day she had to choose if that would be a lunch or a dinner. She would eat the crust of bread; cutting the crusts off the bread, for herself while giving the bread to her daughter. Though there was no immediate change to her circumstances, she had already decided to put her trust in God. The company started to send her to classes and she rose from rank to rank, security guard to receptionist, to administrator, to manager, to senior manager to Managing Director, all in a span of 6 years! God is Faithful!
God did not just restore her financially, but blessed her with a God-fearing man who is now her husband, loving and accepting not just her but her daughter too. At the peak of her career, her husband was diagnosed with cancer and had to stop work, it was in the midst of all this that God told her to leave her very successful career, the instruction was to “flee and do not look back!”. Now? At this time when she is sole bread winner and her husband is down with cancer? She spoke with her husband about this and he told her that if God says to do it, then do it. And she did it. Not knowing the whys, the hows, the whats, the whens. By faith, she obeyed.
Very shortly after, she felt God asking her to start a business, she was all game until she found out which line of business God is calling her into; Food and Beverage! She CAN’T COOK! She was in the fashion industry, she could do that, but F&B???? “If you succeed in what you are good at, what glory is that to me?” she hears God speaks to her heart. She spoke once again to her husband, and once again she got the same reply that if God says to do it, then they should do it. God showed her clearly to set up her F&B business in Bugis Junction. She visited it and found that the only place she could afford was a stall in the food court with a rental of $38,000 a month. Her financial calculations showed her that if she didn’t make it in 3 months, she would go bankrupt! All will be lost. She went head on and day 1 and it’s following days were truly a disaster! She finds herself crying and singing a same song (“….What can I do but give my life to you, What can I do but praise You, everyday make everything I do a hallelujah….”) to God everyday. Instead of smelling perfume as was the case of how it was when she was in the fashion industry, she now smells daily like an onion. She finds herself working 16 hours a day. She and her husband has suddenly become ‘chefs’. She would check her till with much disappointment ever so now and then. She was always last in her earnings in the whole food court! She cried out to God, and God revealed, “You say you trust me? But that’s only lip service.”
Lip service! After all these obedience?! Some of us would be angry with God, but Judith looked deep and found that God’s revelation of her heart at this point was true. She then decided to put it all in God’s hands now. She continued to work hard, stopped checking her till and left it all into God’s hands. In 3 months, from being the last in her earnings compared to all the other stalls, her stall’s earnings had now become a consistent first!
GOD IS FAITHFUL!
The challenges in Judith’s life did not end there, neither did her victories. The same can surely be said of our challenges and victories.
What I learnt from Judith’s story is that knowing truths don’t change lives. Knowing God’s Word, don’t change lives. It is only when we we’ve made the decision to believe and apply those truths in our lives, will our life start to take a new turn. Only when we’ve decided to put it all into God’s hands. It reminds one of a saying,
“Have courage for the great sorrows of life
and patience for the small ones;
and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task,
go to sleep in peace. God is awake.”
When we’ve learnt to trust God with all our hearts and not with our understanding, when we seek Him earnestly, only then will we take on a new life, we become a new creation, for now He has become our Lord, not just our Saviour. He is now the driver, taking us on this life journey; His way, His route.
‘And we know that in all things God works for the good
of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.’
Romans 8:28 (emphasis my own)
What happened to her husband? Did he survive the cancer? All glory to God, he is alive and very well today! Another miracle from God!
I wished many more were there to hear for themselves the many other stories in Judith life that will always be a reminder here in my heart of God’s unchanging faithfulness. The story of David and Goliath still exists today. Like David, focus on our all mighty God and we’ll see the giants in our life tumble!
Us stumbling or giants tumbling?………
The faithfulness of God doesn’t change, but my faith, our faith?……….The choice is mine and yours?
“……then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
the gods of your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates,
or gods of the Amorites, in the whose land you are living.
But as for me and my household,
we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24: 15
